Zhilei Zhang has asserted that Anthony Joshua will never agree to a rematch in the professional ranks. Their first encounter was at the 2012 London Olympics, where Joshua secured a victory over Zhang after knocking him down with a powerful shot. Despite not meeting again as professionals, with Joshua currently focused on reclaiming the heavyweight world title, Zhang is adamant that a rematch won’t materialize due to Joshua’s choice of opponents.
Speaking on the MMA Hour, Zhang expressed his belief, stating, “Mark my words, he’s not fighting me. He’s not going to fight me, ever.” Reflecting on their paths since the Olympics, Zhang indicated that discussions with his managers and insights into Matchroom Boxing’s decisions lead him to doubt the possibility of a future bout.
Zhang critiqued Joshua’s recent opponents, suggesting they were selected strategically to avoid facing him. He emphasized, “Look at his previous opponents – Francis Ngannou from the UFC, Robert Helenius. I don’t think he has what it takes to stand up to me.” Zhang also noted efforts made by his management to arrange a fight, including discussions after Joshua’s loss to Usyk and Zhang’s own bout in Saudi Arabia, but these attempts were unsuccessful.
In Zhang’s view, Joshua’s status as a “cash cow” for promoter Eddie Hearn further complicates the likelihood of their rematch occurring.
