In a recent training session, Bayern Munich showcased a drill focusing on delivering fast, low passes into the box from the left wing. The session highlighted the strong start that Vincent Kompany has made as the team’s head coach. Once a world-class center-back, Kompany participated in the drill, demonstrating his defensive prowess.
Bayern’s players may have preferred Kompany to remain on the sidelines, as he made two remarkable interventions. The first was a perfectly timed sliding tackle, diverting the ball out for what would have been a corner kick. Clearly pleased with his performance, Kompany celebrated with a fist pump as he returned to his position.
In his second intervention, after a Bayern player was bypassed, Jamal Musiala appeared poised to score. However, Kompany managed to get a crucial touch, poking the ball out of play just in time. His reaction, standing tall and asserting himself, drew an enthusiastic response from Joshua Kimmich, who exclaimed, “This is crazy!”
This display of defensive skill follows another training clip where Kompany demonstrated his footwork during a rondo drill. After receiving the ball from Thomas Müller, he faced immediate pressure from Konrad Laimer but skillfully spun away and laid the ball off using the outside of his boot.
Despite Bayern’s solid center-back pairing of Dayot Upamecano and Min-Jae Kim, Kompany’s performance raises the possibility that he could step in if a defensive crisis arose. However, his primary focus remains as head coach, where he has enjoyed a perfect record so far.
Since taking over from Thomas Tuchel, Kompany has led Bayern through six competitive matches without a loss, scoring an impressive 29 goals and conceding only five. This includes a remarkable 9-2 victory against Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League.
Kompany’s management record has evolved significantly. His previous tenures included a 45.65% win rate at Anderlecht and a 42.71% win rate at Burnley. Now, with a 100% win rate at Bayern, he is proving to be a valuable asset for the club, particularly following a challenging season at Burnley that ended in relegation.
As he continues to lead Bayern Munich, Kompany’s impressive start not only reinforces his capabilities as a manager but also highlights the potential for exciting developments in the Bundesliga this season.
