The FIA has removed a piece of artificial turf from the Hungarian Grand Prix track, which was the cause of Yuki Tsunoda’s serious accident during qualifying.
In Q3 at the Hungaroring, Tsunoda was in ninth place looking to improve his time as he ran slightly wide exiting the long right-hand turn at Turn 5.
The RB racer ran through a strip of artificial grass, causing the car to quickly crash into a concrete barrier, destroying the left side of the car.
Tsunoda was ordered to rest after completing some but not all of his media duties, and took 10th fastest place while teammate Daniel Ricciardo took ninth when the session restarted.
In response, on Sunday morning FIA race director Niels Wittich issued a new set of race director notes, confirming that the artificial turf had been removed, replaced by a gravel strip 4m wide where Tsunoda passed.
