Luang Pho Daeng was a revered Thai Buddhist monk who passed away in 1973 while deep in meditation. His mummified body remains on display at Wat Khunaram temple on Ko Samui island in Thailand’s Surat Thani Province, fulfilling his wish to inspire future generations through his preserved form. He had foreseen his death and spent his final days in complete isolation, focused solely on meditation.
In a unique and somewhat controversial practice, caretakers at the temple placed sunglasses on Luang Pho Daeng’s mummified body to cover his decomposed eye sockets, making the sight less unsettling for visitors. Additionally, a native species of gecko has made the body its nesting site, laying eggs beneath the monk’s skin. These elements contribute to the ongoing intrigue and spiritual significance surrounding Luang Pho Daeng’s preserved remains at Wat Khunaram.
