Algerian boxer Imane Khelif has become the subject of controversy after her recent Olympic bout against Italian boxer Angela Carini, which ended after just 46 seconds when Carini abandoned the match. Rumors quickly circulated that Khelif was transgender, but these claims are false. According to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Khelif was assigned female at birth, holds a female passport, and has always identified as a woman.
The Algerian Olympic and Sports Committee (COA) condemned the “malicious” and “unethical” attacks aimed at Khelif, calling them unfair attempts to defame her at a pivotal moment in her career. The controversy surrounding Khelif traces back to her disqualification from the 2023 Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi by the International Boxing Association (IBA). Though the specifics were kept confidential, the IBA cited her failure to meet eligibility criteria for the women’s division.
Despite rumors regarding Khelif’s gender, the IBA did not conduct a testosterone examination but referred to another test that allegedly gave her a competitive advantage. Khelif, along with Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting, faced similar disqualifications. Both were reportedly found to have “XY chromosomes,” sparking speculation about conditions related to differences in sexual development (DSD). However, the exact reasons for their disqualification remain unclear, and the COA has fiercely defended Khelif’s eligibility.
The IOC criticized the IBA’s decision, arguing that eligibility rules should be based on scientific evidence and should not be changed mid-competition. Khelif has competed in numerous international boxing tournaments, including the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and has consistently demonstrated her talent in the sport.
Khelif, who grew up in the rural village of Tiaret in western Algeria, began her boxing journey despite facing resistance from her family and community. She and her mother sold scrap metal and couscous to fund her training, overcoming obstacles to pursue her passion for boxing. Now, amidst false accusations and controversy, Khelif remains focused on her Olympic aspirations while continuing to receive support from the COA and the broader sports community.
Both Khelif and Lin have yet to publicly respond to the ongoing rumors, but the IOC continues to affirm their right to compete without discrimination.
