Helmut Marko reveals uncertainty over Max Verstappen’s future at Red Bull following team’s poor form.
Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko has revealed uncertainty over Max Verstappen’s long-term future at Red Bull Racing.
Despite the three-time champion signing a contract until 2028, the current pressure on Red Bull, coupled with the driver’s verbal frustration and potential exit clauses, has cast a shadow over his tenure.
The Austrian team finds itself under increasing pressure from rivals McLaren and Ferrari. McLaren are now just eight points behind, while Ferrari are 39 points behind. The team celebrated their most recent win in Spain, and have averaged just 18 points per race over the last six races. McLaren, by contrast, have averaged 31 points, while Ferrari and Mercedes have averaged 22 points each over the same period.
Verstappen, who has been a key asset for Red Bull, has recently expressed his frustration, admitting that winning both titles this season is “unrealistic”. His contract includes an opt-out clause, which has fuelled speculation, particularly in light of the recent Christian Horner saga, when it was suggested that the clause could be triggered earlier than expected.
Furthermore, Adrian Newey’s expected move to Aston Martin, along with Honda’s engine supply, could also influence Verstappen’s decision. With these developments, Red Bull’s stability has been shaken significantly.
Amid the speculation, Helmut Marko commented to the media, quoted by Pit Pass: “Next year, he will drive for Red Bull Racing. But [2026] is a long way away, and right now, we are fully focused on the 2024 world championship.”
