”NOT NORMAL” Danica Patrick Criticized For Feminine Mind Comment During Sky F1 Broadcast

Danica Patrick, the ex-IndyCar and NASCAR racer, has found herself in the center of a heated debate following her recent comments about the inherent skillset and mindset required for racing, suggesting they are not naturally aligned with females. As one of the most recognized and successful female racers, Patrick’s statements have drawn sharp criticism and disappointment from various corners of the motorsport community.

Patrick’s racing credentials are impressive. She is a race winner in IndyCar and boasts extensive experience in both IndyCar and NASCAR. Her presence on the Sky F1 broadcast team brings a wealth of knowledge to the commentary box. However, her views on the potential for women to progress in Formula 1 have raised eyebrows and sparked controversy.

During an ‘F1 juniors’ broadcast, which was part of Sky F1’s coverage over the Hungarian GP weekend, Patrick was asked by a young girl if she would like to see women compete in Formula 1. Her response was unexpected and contentious. Patrick stated, “As I’ve always said in my whole career, it takes 100 guys to come through to find a good one, and then it takes 100 girls. That takes a long time to find a good one, right?”

Patrick continued, “The odds are not in favor of there always being one or being many of them. And at the end of the day, I think that the nature of the sport is masculine. It’s aggressive. You have to handle the car – not only just the car because that’s skill, but the mindset that it takes to be really good is something that’s not normal in a feminine mind, a female mind.”

She elaborated on her perspective by describing the aggressive mentality required in racing. “You have to be like, for me, I know if somebody tries to bow up to make it difficult on me, I would go into like an aggressive kill mode, right? You just want to go after them, and that’s just not a natural feminine thought. I say that because I’ve asked my friends about it, and they’re like, ‘Yeah, that’s not how I think.’”

Patrick’s comments have been met with a mix of backlash and support. Critics argue that her views perpetuate stereotypes and discourage young female drivers from pursuing careers in motorsport. They emphasize the importance of creating an inclusive environment that fosters talent regardless of gender. The timing of her remarks is particularly sensitive given Formula 1’s recent efforts to inspire and support a new generation of female drivers through initiatives like the F1 Academy.

Following the collapse of the W Series, Formula 1 launched the all-female F1 Academy category, aiming to create pathways for female racers to advance up the junior ladder into Formula 1. Marta García currently leads the Drivers’ Championship with two rounds and six races remaining in the inaugural 2023 campaign, showcasing the potential and talent present among female drivers.

Patrick’s perspective, however, highlights a broader discussion about gender and racing. While her experience and achievements are undeniable, her comments suggest a belief that the inherent nature of racing may not align with the natural dispositions of females. This viewpoint, whether rooted in personal experience or anecdotal evidence, underscores the ongoing challenges and biases that women in motorsport continue to face.

As Formula 1 and other racing series strive to break down barriers and create equal opportunities, Patrick’s comments serve as a reminder of the complexities involved in changing long-standing perceptions and encouraging diversity in a traditionally male-dominated sport. The conversation ignited by her remarks may well contribute to a deeper understanding and more concerted efforts towards inclusivity in motorsport.
