Mike Tyson is officially fired up for the upcoming Olympics. With the Opening Ceremonies just around the corner, the boxing legend took to social media to share his excitement about Team USA’s prospects in the boxing competitions, eagerly anticipating their pursuit of gold.
Although Tyson himself never competed in the Olympics, he secured back-to-back gold medals in the Junior Olympics in 1981 and 1982 before making his professional debut in 1985 and establishing himself as one of the sport’s most iconic figures.
While the Paris Games may not feature a boxing star as renowned as Tyson, the sport will certainly capture attention. The boxing events commence on Saturday and continue through August 10, culminating with the women’s 75kg final and the men’s 75kg final. There will be eight weight classes for men and five for women, with a total of 248 boxers participating.
USA Today’s Josh Peter has spotlighted Jahmal Harvey, Joshua Edwards, and Jennifer Lozano as key American boxing contenders to watch. Harvey (featherweight) and Edwards (super heavyweight) each won gold medals at the 2023 Pan American Games, while Lozano (flyweight) secured silver.
Tyson, meanwhile, is set to step back into the ring on November 15 for a highly anticipated bout against Jake Paul.
