Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson said he was ready to fight after a health issue forced the postponement of a highly anticipated exhibition boxing match with boxer Jake Paul.
“I’m doing great,” Tyson told the Dallas Morning News ahead of the Cowboys’ home opener on Sunday against the Saints.
Both fighters were on the field before the fight, facing off in the middle of the field, and stayed to watch the Cowboys play the Saints. Paul wore a white Cowboys jersey. Tyson, who wore a navy blue Cowboys jersey, gave a positive health update.
“Yeah, the doctor said I’m fine, no ulcers or anything,” he said. “I’m almost 100 percent of my own blood. I lost a lot of blood. I’m recovering.”
In May, Tyson was treated for a bleeding ulcer after suffering a medical emergency on a flight from Miami to Los Angeles. The Tyson-Paul fight was originally scheduled for July 20, but Tyson’s health issues pushed it to November.
Paul fought on July 20, defeating bare-knuckle fighter Mike Perry. Paul defeated UFC legend Nate Diaz at the American Airlines Center last August.
The rescheduled Tyson-Paul fight will be eight rounds, each lasting two minutes. Boxing matches typically last three minutes.
“I think it’s more fun,” Tyson said. “You can throw more punches and it’s about entertainment. I just want to entertain the crowd.”
Tyson said he was sparring for six three-minute rounds. Although Paul said he would win by knockout, the former champion was undeterred.
“I’m going to win,” Tyson said. “When you’re looking for a knockout, you usually lose.”
Tyson, who grew up in Brooklyn, said his favorite NFL player is New York Giants Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor. However, he said he is a big Cowboys fan.
“You know, listen, when Deion Sanders and the other guys are here, [Troy] Aikman, I’m like the rest of the world, we’re all Cowboys fans.”
