Sergio Perez has been under huge pressure recently as his future with Red Bull is a hotly debated topic. Against this backdrop, Daniel Ricciardo has emerged as the most likely candidate to replace the number 11 driver in the Bulls’ second position next year.
The trio of Max Verstappen, Perez and Ricciardo are all at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend. Celebrating Red Bull’s 20th anniversary in Formula 1, Verstappen was interviewed by former F1 driver Karun Chandhok.
With both Perez and Ricciardo in attendance, the Dutch driver expressed his desire to work with Honey Badger again. However, it should be noted that Verstappen is talking about the RAC TT category.
“It would probably be fun to be in the same car as Daniel,” commented the three-time world champion. He also went on to joke that Adrian Newey was “illegally” modifying his car when running in such events.
Despite the backdrop of events at the iconic Goodwood circuit this weekend, Verstappen’s comments received a warm reception from the crowd. Even Chandhok is excited at the prospect of Verstappen and Ricciardo teaming up again under the Red Bull banner.
Who can replace Perez at Red Bull?
On paper, Ricciardo is not a bright candidate to replace Perez at Red Bull. However, the Australian racer’s achievements so far are not really impressive. Like Perez, he is also not noticed and is at risk of losing his seat at V-CARB at the end of the season.
On the other hand, Red Bull’s young driver Liam Lawson also failed to impress the team in his recent Silverstone test. The New Zealander’s ride in the RB20 was described by those in attendance as unimpressive.
Now, the Austrian team also does not consider Yuki Tsunoda a reliable replacement for the number 11 driver. This young Honda-backed driver is more likely to consider Aston Martin in the future than Red Bull. At least for now, Perez can breathe a sigh of relief.
