Luis Suarez Provides Injury Update on Lionel Messi Following Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup Victory.
Luis Suarez, forward for Inter Miami, has provided an update on the injury status of team captain Lionel Messi after the team’s 2-0 victory over Puebla in their opening match of the 2024 Leagues Cup on July 28.
Messi has been sidelined due to an ankle injury sustained during Argentina’s 1-0 victory over Colombia in extra time of the Copa America final earlier this month. Since that match, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has missed three matches for his club, with no clear timeline for his return.
Recently, Suarez shared promising news regarding Messi’s condition after the win against Puebla, confirming that his teammate is making good progress in his recovery and will be back on the field soon:
“Everyone knows how committed Leo Messi is to this club, to the national team, and his desire to play. As days go by, he’s getting closer to returning to the pitch, where we all want to see him.”
Lionel Messi has faced a challenging start to his first season with Inter Miami, dealing with injuries. The legendary player, born in 1987, has contributed 14 goals and 11 assists in 15 matches across all competitions in 2024.
This includes 12 goals and 9 assists in 12 MLS matches, where The Herons currently lead the standings by 5 points after 25 games. Messi’s other contributions include 2 goals and 2 assists in 3 matches from the CONCACAF Champions Cup, where Tata Martinez’s team was eliminated in the quarter-finals.
In that tournament, Messi missed the 1-2 first-leg home defeat to Monterrey due to his injury but provided one assist in the second leg. However, The Herons ultimately lost 1-3 in the second leg, resulting in a 2-5 aggregate defeat.
