The world of tennis is in turmoil after the recent statements by Matteo Berrettini, who openly challenged Novak Djokovic in a battle that could shake the entire ATP circuit. The Roman tennis player did not use minor terms in commenting on the so -called “document against the culprits”, signed by Djokovic and over 300 supporters, including some top players.
Berrettini, in an exclusive interview, harshly criticized Djokovic’s initiative, claiming that it is an orchestrated operation to destabilize professional tennis.
“Those who cannot win with the game only want to destroy. We Italians have shown that we can compete at the highest levels, and this attempt to delegitimize those who commit hardly are unacceptable!”, said Berrettini in a decisive tone.
This statement comes in a delicate moment, with Italian tennis in great growth thanks to the performance of Jannik Sinner, Lorenzo Musetti and the same Berrettini.
Matteo Berrettini did not limit himself to criticizing Djokovic, but also openly defended his compatriot Jannik Sinner, current number one of Italian tennis, who remained outside the controversy.
“Jannik does not get dragged into these useless wars. He works hard, gets results and does not need to sign documents to accuse others”, said Berrettini.
The Roman then launched an unprecedented appeal, inviting Italian tennis players to boycott any initiative linked to the PTPA (the association founded by Djokovic) and to the signatories of the document.
“We have to remain united and do not fall into this game of power that damages sport”, concluded.
Novak Djokovic, who has always been a controversial figure in the circuit, responded with an arrow on social media:
“It is not surprising to me that some prefer to remain silent instead of fighting for the rights of the players. But the truth will always come to the surface.”
The words of the Serbian have done nothing but increase the tension between the two sides, with the fans of both athletes who are dividing themselves into a social battle without exclusion of shots.
This war of words could have significant consequences on professional tennis policy. The ATP and WTA, until now remained on the sidelines, could intervene to calm the waters. In the meantime, Italian tennis tightens around its champions, hoping that controversy will not distract athletes from their sporting goals.
One thing is certain: this story is only at the beginning and the world of tennis will remain with the breath suspended for the next developments. 🎾
