Sky Sports F1’s Martin Brundle gives his verdict on Lando Norris’ dominant win at the Dutch Grand Prix, Max Verstappen’s consistently slow Red Bull pace and a poor weekend for Williams; watch the Italian GP live on Sky Sports F1 this weekend
It was a race that propelled Lando Norris up a notch or two in the Formula 1 pantheon of greats.
His attempt to take pole position in qualifying was one of those ‘where’s the lap time coming from’ moments, and he got off to a good start in the short run to the first corner.
Max Verstappen also drove a great lap to hold off an all-McLaren front row, with Oscar Piastri taking third in the sister McLaren. We know by now how good Piastri is, and it only highlights how comfortable Norris is in his upgraded McLaren.
We’re told that the upgrade is worth around 30 per cent of the improvements they made in Miami, which were game-changing for the team at the time. So not only is it worth it in theory, but unlike some other teams, it’s also measurable on the stopwatch.
It was a strange weekend with lots of rain and strong winds affecting the build-up to the race. This caused headaches for many drivers and teams as their pace fluctuated. And if they were to encounter a gust of wind in the wrong corner or shift their handling balance too far forward or back, their performance on the track could suffer.
We saw some big differences between teammates on the track, with the likes of Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton particularly struggling to make the top 10 in Q3.
Hamilton will have to endure more pain as he was demoted three places on the grid for holding up Sergio Perez. Given the short and twisty nature of the track, it was all unfortunate and there was not much he could have done, but in the end it was a fair and consistent penalty.
