Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri once again showcased their strength on the Formula 1 grid by topping the timesheets during Friday’s practice sessions for the 2025 Japanese Grand Prix. Despite the impressive pace displayed by the McLaren duo, both drivers admitted it was far from an easy day as strong winds and multiple red flags disrupted the flow of practice at the legendary Suzuka Circuit.
McLaren on Top Amidst a Turbulent Day
The first free practice session saw Lando Norris clock the fastest lap, while teammate Oscar Piastri delivered a strong performance to take the lead during the second session. However, Piastri’s time came in a session heavily interrupted by red flags, making it difficult to draw definitive conclusions about the competitive order heading into qualifying.

In total, four red flags were waved during the second session. The most dramatic moment came when Jack Doohan suffered a terrifying 185mph crash. Fortunately, the young driver emerged unscathed from the high-speed incident. Later interruptions included Fernando Alonso beaching his car and two separate grass fires around the track, likely caused by the heat and friction from trackside debris.
Despite the limited running time, McLaren left the paddock on Friday evening in a positive mood, confident that their package is competitive this weekend.
Norris: “We’re in a Good Position”
Speaking to Sky Sports, Lando Norris shared his thoughts on a day filled with challenges:
“We’re in a good position,” said Norris. “It’s been tough with the wind. It makes a big difference, especially on a circuit like this. You’re right on the edge for so long around Suzuka. Even a small gust can unsettle the car massively.”
Norris praised the improvements made to the car but remained realistic about the competition.
“I still feel good, I think we’re in a decent place. We’ve made some steps forward, but there are still areas to work on and improve for tomorrow. I’m expecting it to be close – a tight battle. Hopefully not, though! Hopefully it’s easy and smooth, but I’m sure at least Mercedes, especially George [Russell] based on today’s pace, will challenge us.”
Hamilton Encouraged Despite Ferrari’s Struggles
While Lewis Hamilton may not be among the top contenders this weekend, the seven-time world champion expressed his enjoyment of driving at Suzuka and remained optimistic about his chances.
“Today was actually a great day. This track is just incredible,” Hamilton said after the sessions. “Practice went well. It was a bit concerning to see that crash at Turn 1 – glad to see Doohan is okay.”
Hamilton completed his run program without issues and hinted that Ferrari still has performance to unlock:
“We ran through everything we needed to. We’ve got some performance to find. Right now, we’re not the fastest team, but this is a good starting point.”
A Weekend Full of Uncertainty and Opportunity
The high number of red flags, combined with the unpredictable wind conditions, has left teams with limited data heading into Saturday’s crucial qualifying session. Still, McLaren’s strong pace cannot be ignored, and both Norris and Piastri appear poised to be serious podium contenders in Sunday’s race.
Suzuka has always been a true driver’s circuit – fast, flowing, and unforgiving. The ability to adapt to changing track conditions and make the most of limited laps could prove crucial this weekend.
What to Expect Moving Forward
With qualifying on Saturday and the race on Sunday, all eyes will be on how teams adapt overnight. Will McLaren maintain their edge? Can Mercedes and Ferrari close the gap? And will Red Bull, who stayed under the radar during Friday practice, bring their usual firepower when it counts?
What’s certain is that the Japanese Grand Prix 2025 is already delivering drama, excitement, and plenty of unpredictability. Fans around the world will be eagerly watching as the best drivers in the world prepare to tackle one of Formula 1’s most iconic circuits.
