Marquez’s superb performance in the wet gave him his second win in as many races after his Aragon Grand Prix triumph last weekend
Marc Marquez won the San Marino Grand Prix ahead of Francesco Bagnaia on Sunday after championship leader Jorge Martin’s gamble to change his bike in the rain at Misano backfired when the weather cleared.
Marquez’s superb performance in the wet gave him his second win in as many races after his Aragon Grand Prix triumph last weekend as he denied Italian team Ducati on home soil, while Enea Bastianini finished third.
Martin eventually finished 15th after a double bike change that saw his championship lead over Bagnaia narrow to seven points, while Marquez is now 53 points behind the Pramac Racing rider.
“For me, the most important thing was the pace after that rain, it gave me the possibility to lead the race. Then, when I was in the lead, I said to myself, ‘Now I’m going to try to find the same pace as in practice’,” Marquez said.
“The emotions were high when we crossed the line, I was extremely happy,” he added.
With the threat of rain approaching, Martin made another good start – similar to how he won the sprint on Saturday – but this time Bagnaia was able to stay in the lead and hold on.
The pair almost collided on the second lap before Martin braked hard to avoid a collision, while his team-mate Franco Morbidelli damaged Pedro Acosta’s wing as he overtook the GasGas Tech3, despite the rookie managing to keep his balance.
But without a wing on one side, Acosta struggled to control the bike around the track and eventually skidded off at Turn 14 a few laps into the race before rejoining the track, dropping from fourth to last.
However However, the rain came with 21 laps to go and Morbidelli was the first to crash when he slid off the wet pavement at Turn 1.
Martin took a risk and led a group of riders into the holding area to change bikes, but the rain suddenly stopped and Marquez and Bagnaia decided to continue racing.
Marquez then regained his form and took the lead ahead of Bagnaia, who was cautiously navigating the wet section of the track.
But the rain soon cleared and Martin was forced to return to change to slicks, with the Spaniard shaking his head in frustration as he rejoined the track behind Marquez and Bagnaia, but a lap behind.
With Bagnaia’s direct rival gone, the Italian decided not to take any chances, sticking cautiously with Marquez while Bastianini moved up to third on his familiar home track.
Up front, Marquez slowly increased the gap to Bagnaia and the Spaniard took the win to spark celebrations in the Gresini Racing garage.
Meanwhile, South Africa’s Brad Binder crossed the line shortly after to claim fourth place, his best result since the second Grand Prix in Portugal at the end of March.
