“I’ve Got What It Takes to Dismantle Him” Undefeated Champ Sets Sights on Heavyweight Showdown with Usyk

Oleksandr Usyk has achieved a remarkable feat in the boxing world, joining the ranks of legendary fighters like Evander Holyfield.

After winning Olympic Gold, Usyk dominated the cruiserweight division, claiming victories over top contenders such as Krzysztof Głowacki, Mairis Briedis, and Murat Gassiev to become the undisputed champion. Following a farewell fight against Tony Bellew, he made a successful transition to heavyweight.

Usyk’s impressive win over Anthony Joshua crowned him unified champion, and he successfully defended his titles in two significant rematches: one against Joshua and another against Daniel Dubois. His latest triumph came via a split decision against Tyson Fury, allowing him to capture the final heavyweight belt.

As he prepares for a rematch with Fury, speculation arises about Usyk’s future should he emerge victorious. Usyk himself has hinted at a potential return to the cruiserweight division, capturing the attention of current IBF Cruiserweight World Champion Jai Opetaia.

In a recent interview with TalkSPORT, Opetaia expressed eagerness to share the ring with Usyk. “Respectfully, I would love to fight him,” Opetaia stated. He recalled Usyk’s victory in the division during their time at the Olympic Games and shared his aspirations to reach the top. “I’ve always been in the shadows, just waiting for my chance. I believe I have the style to beat him.”

At 29 years old, Opetaia’s rapid ascent in the cruiserweight ranks occurred after Usyk’s move to heavyweight. While a bout between the two was not anticipated in the past, the matchup promises to deliver an exhilarating technical contest: Opetaia’s fearless aggression against Usyk’s elite movement and stamina.

Notably, Tyson Fury once invited Opetaia to his camp for sparring to mimic Usyk’s style, although plans shifted, leading to Opetaia’s early departure. Despite offering his services for Fury’s rematch training, his upcoming fight against Jack Massey on October 12 may impede his involvement.
