“IT’S NOT GOOD THAT WE’RE IN THIS SITUATION” Norris Says Of “Worst Feeling” After Tarnishing Piastri F1’s First Win

Lando Norris admits he feels “not too proud” about the long chat about his team order at the Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix, which saw his team-mate at McLaren Oscar Piastri won first. On McLaren’s final pit stop, Norris was serviced first, even though he was at the time in second place and behind Piastri.

Piastri pitted two laps later and appeared behind Norris, the team instructed Norris to make way for the Australian driver to get into position. Norris fought hard for several laps before giving up his position three laps before the finish, giving Piastri his first grand prix win. After having a few days to reflect on the incident, Norris expressed regret for how the situation unfolded.

“Could it be possible to handle this a little bit differently from both the team side and the individual side? Yes, absolutely,” Norris replied. “We wouldn’t be having this conversation in some ways. Even if outsiders think and come up with their own stories about what happened and what I did and wouldn’t do, I don’t mind that.

“But the things I was able to do, the fact that I overshadowed Oscar’s win, his first win in F1, is something I don’t feel too proud of.

“The fact that we won a one-two and that was hardly reported after the race, nothing was really said from that side, that’s what makes me feel the worst. “Also, we discussed it, we talked about it. Both sides can do things a little better and a little differently. “It wasn’t good that we had this situation but it was a good moment that we had, we learned from it and hope to do better next time.”
