Ice Cube believes that Kendrick Lamar will “face off” with Drake
On Monday (June 17), Ice Cube joined Shaq’s The Big Podcast to share his thoughts on rap music, specifically the feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. Cube said he loves rap battles as long as they don’t lead to street violence and thinks Kendrick should be ready to respond if Drake strikes next.
“I’m always in favor of rap battles, because that’s the nature of the game,” Cube says at the 4:45 mark in the video below. “It’s part of the game, as long as it doesn’t turn violent because then it’s not rap anymore. When it comes down to it, it’s just street crime. So as long as it’s on tape, it’s a great thing. I think Kendrick was successful, I think he hit harder and more effectively. But that doesn’t mean Drake can’t get back in the game. So if I were Kendrick, I would be ready for whatever comes next.”
Ice Cube isn’t the first to declare Kendrick the winner of his clash with Drake. Other rappers such as LL Cool J, Dame Dash and Benny The Butcher have also declared Kendrick the winner, and even The New York Times weighed in and awarded Kendrick a W award.
Ice Cube thinks “No Vaseline” is better than Kendrick’s diss songs
Even though Cube may declare Kendrick the winner, he still believes he has the greatest diss song of all time with 1991’s “No Vaseline.”
“[People say] Tupac [‘Hit Em Up’] but that’s not true,” Cube said in May during a concert in Tucson, Ariz. “’No, Cube, wait. It’s Nas with ‘Ether’. I love Nas, but that’s not it. Maybe it’s Kendrick Lamar, maybe it’s him. I love their songs, but “No Vaseline” is the best diss song in hip-hop history.”
He continued, “I’ll tell you why. An MC, mys
elf. I took down four muthaf**kas and the manager. You can’t beat that. We did that over 30 years ago. So as of today, I have nothing but love for NWA.”
“No Vaseline” came about after Cube left NWA and responded to attacks from former members and their manager, Jerry Heller. The song did not even receive a response and is ofte
n considered one of the greatest diss songs of all time.
As for Kendrick and Drake, technically speaking, it’s Kendrick’s turn to respond. Drake released “The Heart Part 6” on May 6, after Kendrick continuously released diss tracks with “Meet the Grahams” and “Not Like Us.” The latter song remains at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.
