Yuki Tsunoda has been ordered to rest for medical reasons following a serious accident during qualifying for the Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix. After running off track at the exit of Turn 5 at the Hungaroring, Tsunoda crashed into the artificial turf and was unable to prevent his RB from sliding into the concrete wall, destroying the left side of the car.
After being taken to the medical center for mandatory examination, Tsunoda completed the television interview but did not attend the written press conference following advice to rest.
Speaking to F1TV after the collision, which occurred with just over two minutes left to end Q3, Tsunoda was incoherent.
“To be honest, I felt great going into the corner,” he said when asked what happened. “But I didn’t expect that. I just ran wide there.” But then he added: “I was running comfortably on the track but half the tire fell on the grass. “With things like this, usually it [explosion] happens. Maybe because it’s wet, it’s a bit exaggerated and flies wide. “Up until that turn, the lap was great. It’s a shame.”
Currently, Tsunoda is ranked 10th on the starting grid although it is unknown whether any changes will be needed to the car to be able to enter the pit-lane. When asked if he still had hope of gaining points with his starting position, Tsunoda replied: “I was more worried about my car than my body. It’s a pity. I’m disappointed. I hope my car is good. Obviously I feel bad for the team.”
