History Against Spain When Facing England at EURO.
Spain has never beaten England in the EURO finals. With a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands in the semi-finals of EURO 2024 in the early morning of July 11 , the final match of this year’s tournament will be a confrontation between Spain and England.
Immediately, AS (Spain) page issued a warning to “La Roja” (the nickname of the Spanish team), emphasizing that history is not on their side. Accordingly, Spain has never won against England at the EURO finals.
The last time the two teams met at EURO was in 1996 at England’s home field. At that time, the “Three Lions” overcame Spain after a penalty shootout with a score of 4-2 in the quarter-finals, after drawing 0-0 in the official match time. Gareth Southgate, currently the coach of England, was still a player at that time and also participated in this match.
Furthermore, at EURO 1980, England won 2-1 against Spain in the group stage. However, both teams could not pass the knock-out round of this tournament. In the EURO 1968 qualifying round, England also won against Spain after two matches with scores of 1-0 and 2-1.
In the most recent clash in the UEFA Nations League, England won 3-2 against Spain. In this match, Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford shined to help the “Three Lions” lead 3-0 after the first 45 minutes. However, neither Sterling nor Rashford were called up for the EURO 2024 finals.
The EURO 2024 final between Spain and England will take place at 2:00 a.m. on July 15 at Olympiastadion Berlin. With an unfavorable confrontation history, Spain will have to try their best to rewrite history against a confident and strong England team.
