The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix marked the end of an era as Lewis Hamilton completed his final race with Mercedes, officially announcing his move to Ferrari for the 2025 season. This decision, revealed before the start of the 2024 campaign, set the stage for a tumultuous year filled with highs and lows for the seven-time world champion.
Hamilton’s 2024 season began underwhelmingly, as Mercedes struggled to compete with frontrunners. However, a mid-season resurgence saw the Briton claim two race victories, offering a glimmer of hope. Unfortunately, the team’s performance faltered again toward the end of the year, leaving Hamilton and his fans with bittersweet memories of his final stint in silver.
Reflecting on his decade-long partnership with Mercedes, Hamilton achieved an incredible six world titles, contributing to the team’s record-breaking eight constructors’ championships. While many regard Mercedes as “the team of Hamilton’s life,” Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur has a different perspective.
“The team of his life? We’ll judge that in two years,” Vasseur quipped after the Abu Dhabi GP. He went on to highlight Hamilton’s emotional journey in 2024, stating, “Lewis is sensitive and needs to feel surrounded, supported, and loved. It wasn’t always the case this season.”
Hamilton faced challenges both on and off the track, including persistent rumors of Mercedes favoring his teammate George Russell. Out-qualified on several occasions and reportedly excluded from key meetings, Hamilton admitted to moments of despair, fueling speculation about a “Russell bias” within the team.
Despite these hurdles, Vasseur remains confident that Hamilton will rediscover his peak form at Ferrari. In Abu Dhabi, Hamilton showcased his resilience, delivering a stunning P4 finish after starting P16—an effort that saw him outperform Russell, who started in P6.
“When Lewis smells blood, he’s unstoppable,” Vasseur remarked, expressing optimism about Ferrari’s future with the F1 legend at the helm.
Although Hamilton will not participate in Ferrari’s post-season testing due to unresolved agreements with Mercedes, the Scuderia is already looking forward to what he can bring to Maranello. The countdown to a new chapter in Hamilton’s illustrious career has begun, and fans eagerly await his resurgence in Ferrari red.
