Franco Colapinto made waves in 2024, stepping in as a mid-season replacement for Logan Sargeant and quickly capturing attention with his impressive performances. However, despite the buzz around the Argentine driver, his future in Formula 1 now seems uncertain, with no confirmed seats left for 2025 and interest from teams waning.
The final vacant seat on the 2025 grid belongs to Red Bull, but the team is more likely to choose one of its academy stars, such as Liam Lawson, Ayumu Iwasa, or Isack Hadjar. While there were whispers of Colapinto being in contention, those rumors have since died down.
For Colapinto, the chances of staying in F1 appear slim. Red Bull’s focus remains on developing its own talents, and despite Colapinto’s experience and potential, he is not a part of their long-term plans.
Colapinto seems to be exploring opportunities outside of F1, as suggested by his recent social media activity. He has followed the official IndyCar account, while his representatives have reportedly shown interest in Le Mans. The 21-year-old is no stranger to endurance racing, having competed in the LMP2 category of the FIA World Endurance Championship, as well as the European and Asian Le Mans series.
IndyCar, however, may offer Colapinto a better platform to remain in the spotlight. The Argentine’s popularity in the U.S. was evident during the Austin GP, where fans flocked to him in droves. Competing in the IndyCar series could provide valuable experience and maintain his relevance while waiting for another shot at F1.
While F1 may be out of reach for now, the upcoming General Motors project in 2026 could create new opportunities. With GM entering F1 as a constructor, two additional seats will open up, potentially giving Colapinto another chance to return to the grid.
For the moment, Colapinto’s focus appears to be shifting towards IndyCar or Le Mans as he continues to carve out a successful motorsport career beyond Formula 1.
