The FIA has launched an investigation into Oscar Piastri following the emergence of previously unseen footage, prompting some fans to call for McLaren’s disqualification from the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. This statement comes after Piastri’s impressive victory, where he edged out Charles Leclerc in a thrilling contest for the lead. Lando Norris also had a remarkable performance, climbing from 15th to finish fourth, ahead of Max Verstappen.
With this result, McLaren now leads the Constructors’ Championship for the first time in over a decade, overtaking Red Bull. However, the celebration was marred by fan concerns regarding the legality of McLaren’s cars, particularly focusing on Piastri’s rear wing, which appeared to deflect at high speeds in a clip shared on social media.
In response to the outcry, the FIA clarified the status of both McLaren cars, stating that they were among three randomly selected vehicles subjected to scrutineering after the race, alongside Verstappen’s Red Bull and a Haas car driven by Ollie Bearman. The FIA confirmed that all three cars were deemed fully legal following comprehensive checks, including an examination of the rear wing endplate, body, and tip.
FIA Technical Delegate Jo Bauer commented, “All car weights and the checked items were found to be in conformity with the 2024 FIA Formula One Technical Regulations.” This statement aims to reassure fans and teams alike of the compliance of McLaren’s vehicle.
Earlier in the month, both Red Bull and Ferrari had raised complaints about the flexibility of McLaren’s front wing, questioning its adherence to technical regulations. However, the FIA reiterated that the front wing met all necessary requirements. “The FIA is examining front wings at every event with numerous checks for conformity of surfaces and deflections concerning the relevant F1 Technical Regulations,” the statement read, emphasizing that all front wings are currently compliant with the 2024 regulations.
As the season progresses, the scrutiny on car compliance continues, highlighting the intense competition and the high stakes involved in Formula One racing.
