British boxer Sandy Ryan has taken to social media to share a revealing image of her body after a shocking incident where she was hit with a can of paint on Friday. Following her loss of the WBO welterweight world title to Mikaela Mayer, Ryan described the paint incident as an apparent “set up.”
In a dramatic turn of events, Ryan was targeted with red paint just moments before her fight in New York. She posted a picture on X showcasing the damage, which left a prominent mark on her hip and sport leggings. This unsettling attack occurred amidst heightened tensions leading up to the match, where Mayer had accused Ryan of taking her long-time coaching team, an allegation that Ryan denied.
The situation escalated when Ryan was splashed with paint as she was leaving her hotel, an act she believes affected her performance in the ring. Despite the chaos, she proceeded to fight, stating, “I know I shouldn’t have fought after I was attacked leaving my hotel room, but I couldn’t let them win like that. I was fighting off empty and still felt I won the fight.”
Ryan revealed she is currently in contact with the NYPD and has secured the CCTV footage from the incident. She expressed her determination to uncover the truth, insisting, “Pretty obvious what happened and the truth will be set free shortly.”
When approached for comment, Top Rank, the promotional company, condemned the attack, expressing their hope that the responsible party is identified and prosecuted. Ryan entered Madison Square Garden for the scheduled bout despite her trainer’s advice to withdraw, ultimately losing by a majority decision.
The aftermath of this incident has left Ryan reflecting on her performance, stating that the paint incident “unsettled” her, which she believes contributed to her narrow loss. “I’m obviously disappointed, and I’m not taking anything away from the decision. But before coming to the venue, I had a hit and run with paint. And that was definitely set up.”
Mikaela Mayer, the American boxer who defeated Ryan, expressed her shock over the incident, distancing herself and her team from any involvement. The judges scored the match with two in favor of Mayer (97-93 and 96-94) and one judge scoring it a draw (95-95), marking yet another challenging title defense for Ryan, who previously faced a split decision draw against Jessica McCaskill in Florida last September
