Oscar Piastri Delighted As Charles Leclerc Criticises Ferrari Tactics At Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Oscar Piastri has hailed the staff at McLaren following his victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday.

The Australian managed to successfully overtake Charles Leclerc, who had started the day in pole, as he won his second race of the campaign.

Piastri has now opened up after the big event in Baku.

And the F1 star has hailed McLaren staff members, insisting they’re responsible for the team’s brilliant performances this season.

“After the stop it felt like we had a bit of extra grip and I had to go for it,” he told Sky Sports.

“I knew if I didn’t get past at the start of the stint I was never going to get past.

“I went for a pretty big lunge but I managed and then hung on for dear life for the next laps.

“Once he dropped out of DRS it was a little bit more relaxing but there’s no relaxing lap around here.

“It definitely goes down as one of the better races of my career.

“I think considering where we started when I joined the team last year, we were literally last and now we’re leading the world championship.

“It’s a credit to the team for the turnaround in the last 18 months ago, and they’ve improved me as well.

“It’s a massive team effort and I’m excited to see what the future holds.”

While it was a memorable day for Piastri, Leclerc will be disappointed.

He has claimed pole four times in Baku but is yet to savour victory in a Grand Prix in Azerbaijan, despite his best efforts.

Leclerc has sent a message to Carlos Sainz, who was involved in a crash with Sergio Perez towards the end of the race, and was critical of his team’s decision-making as they missed out on glory.

He said: “I think as soon as we put the hard tyres on [when he realised he couldn’t fight for P1].

“On the medium we were very competitive, and the car felt good.

“Unfortunately for me, we didn’t do any high fuel running in FP1 and FP2.

“We went for a set up direction which in the race was a bit more difficult to manage.

“Especially on the hard tyres I was struggling to keep those rears and at the end I thought in one corner or two I could put it in the wall, it was very close.

“McLaren and Oscar have done an exceptional job and done better than us.

“A huge shame for Carlos on the last laps, hopefully everyone is OK and obviously not a great day for the team.”
