Max Verstappen is facing a sanction from the stewards for misconduct at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen has been placed under investigation for an alleged breach of the virtual safety car rules at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Following a lengthy review, the Red Bull star was given an official warning but no time penalty after the race.

The Dutchman was classified P5 after Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz met on the penultimate lap. However, the incident, which saw him gain two positions, may have also cost him his race.

Verstappen was cited and then investigated by the race stewards for overtaking after the chequered flag under virtual safety car conditions. The 26-year-old was then called in to discuss the incident with the stewards, who ultimately deemed his actions worthy of a warning.

Footage from the RB20 showed the 26-year-old alongside title rival Lando Norris and Mercedes’ George Russell, and congratulating the McLaren and Mercedes drivers.

It was a week to forget for the three-time world champion. With Norris eliminated in Q1, the opportunity arose to claw back some points, but he finished one place behind the McLaren star.

Verstappen was also struggling to find the pace behind team-mate and specialist Baku Perez. The Mexican was on course for his first podium in 12 Grand Prix before teaming up with Sainz.

Unfortunately for the Dutchman and his Red Bull team, Perez’s efforts were of little consequence in their title battle. McLaren now have a 20-point advantage ahead of next weekend’s Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix.
