Will Smith Confirms New Album After Nearly 20 Years, Teases Details on Instagram.
In an interview shared by the Instagram account Black Film Allies, Smith discussed details of his first project since Lost and Found in 2005. “For the past year and a half, I’ve been in the studio,” he revealed. “I have a project that is the most personal and powerful musical work I’ve ever done. The idea of the music is, ‘Dance in your darkest moments.'”
On Tuesday, July 23, Smith posted a teaser on Instagram about his upcoming collaboration with Russ, titled “Work Of Art.” In the post, he announced, “I just finished my album.”
The phrase Dance In Your Darkest Moments seems to be the album’s title, as it already has its own Instagram and website. It is advertised as “a human wellness initiative designed to inspire self-discovery, encourage acceptance, and nurture the celebration of life,” inspired by Smith.
In other news, Smith recently reacted to Childish Gambino mentioning him in a candid speech at the BET Awards. The Oscar winner shared a video on Instagram of himself watching Gambino’s impromptu monologue backstage, where he laughed in agreement with the rapper’s criticism of award shows.
While presenting the Album of the Year award, Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) took aim at the Grammys and BET Awards by comparing his achievements at both events to Will Smith and Sam Smith. “I have more Grammys than Will Smith, which doesn’t make sense. But I have as many BET Awards as Sam Smith,” he said, referencing the white British singer. “Do you understand? Me and Sam Smith are equally successful at Black Entertainment Television [Awards].”
Glover then jokingly added, “If I have to do, like, Baby Boy or something, just let me know. I’ll let Jonathan Majors choke me out and shave my head. I’ll do it!”
Smith — who performed his new gospel song “You Can Make It” at the awards show — clearly enjoyed the rapper’s comments, laughing heartily while watching the segment from the green room.
