Saturday night’s game saw the New York Yankees face a terrible 9-1 defeat against division rivals the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees bounced down with a high deficit loss after winning the opener of their series 6-1.
The Bronx Bombers’ pitching woes were evident during the game, as starting pitcher Nestor Cortes allowed the Rays to build a 5-0 lead by the middle of the fifth inning. The 29-year-old pitched for 4.1 innings and allowed six earned runs on eight hits while striking out just one batter.
Several Yankees fans reacted to their favorite team’s tough loss, with many blaming Nestor Cortes for the defeat.
“Nestor is not good at home either i guess,” a fan said.
“Nestor Cortes really backed up his tweet today with that awful performance. Dude will be pitching for the Long Island Ducks in another year or two,” another fan said.
“Nestor ain’t it anymore. Tough to win games when Cortes constantly puts you in a 5-0 hole. Doesn’t help the whole team didn’t hit either. All-Star break didn’t do anything for the team I see,” another fan wrote.
Many other fans reacted as well, with some blaming the offense for its lack of runs and poor performance.
“This offense is genuinely putrid,” a comment reads.
“Put Nestor, DJ, & Verdugo on a SpaceX rocket to outer space and don’t look back,” another comment reads.
“Desperately need some offense beyond Soto & Judge. Also, Nestor should be long middle inning relief,” someone wrote.
The Yankees’ offense managed to score only one run on five hits in 30 at-bats, with two walks and seven strikeouts.
