Argentina’s Vice President Victoria Villarruel Supports Enzo Fernandez Amid Racial Controversy
In a bold and defiant message, Argentina’s Vice President Victoria Villarruel has come out in support of Enzo Fernandez, the Chelsea midfielder, amid ongoing criticism. Fernandez, during the Copa America 2024 victory celebration with the Argentina national team, was accused of using racially insensitive language towards black French players. Facing immense public pressure, Enzo has since apologized, asserting that he is not a person with racist tendencies.
Chelsea responded to the incident by announcing that they would conduct an internal disciplinary process. The club emphasized its commitment to combating racism and promoting equality.
Unsurprisingly, the French Football Federation (FFF) reacted strongly. In defense of their players, the FFF filed a complaint with FIFA against the Argentine Football Association (AFA), demanding sanctions against Enzo.
The situation escalated further when Vice President Victoria Villarruel publicly backed Enzo. In her statement, she declared, “Argentina is a sovereign and free nation. We have never had colonies or second-class citizens. We do not impose our way of life on anyone, nor will we tolerate others doing so to us.”
Villarruel continued, “Argentina was built on the sweat and bravery of Native Americans, Europeans, Creoles, and black people like Remedios del Valle, Sergeant Cabral, and Bernardo de Monteagudo. No nation can threaten us because of a song or an uncomfortable truth they refuse to acknowledge.”
Villarruel did not mince words, calling out what she termed as hypocritical outrage, “Stop pretending to be outraged, you hypocrites. Enzo, I stand with you. Messi, thank you for everything! Argentinians always hold their heads high! Long live Argentina!”
The Argentine government has also been embroiled in controversy over the song. Deputy Minister of Sports Julio Garro suggested that Lionel Messi and the head of the AFA should apologize for the song. Garro was subsequently dismissed from his position just hours later.
