The ancient city of Arsameia, founded by Arsames in the 2nd century BC, is historically significant as the ancestral seat of the Kingdom of Commagene. It features the tomb of Mithridates I, father of King Antiochus I. Originally serving as the summer capital and administrative hub of Commagene, Arsameia is located 63 km from Adıyaman city center.
Among its notable features is the largest known Greek inscription in Anatolia. Additionally, the city boasts a 10-ton relief depicting the handshake between Hercules and King Antiochus I. In this depiction, the king, crowned and towering over Hercules, appears taller and more powerful. Arsameia also contains 157-meter-long carved tunnels, along with various sculptures and cisterns scattered throughout the site.
