Toto Wolff insists Mercedes’ recent form has not changed their thinking about the 2025 driver pairing. Mercedes won two consecutive races for the first time since 2021, with George Russell winning in Austria, followed by Lewis Hamilton at the British Formula 1 Grand Prix a week later.
Of course, the seven-time F1 champion will leave Mercedes to join Ferrari next season on a multi-year deal, opening up a seat at Silver Arrows. Mercedes teenage star Andrea Kimi Antonelli is expected to fill the 2025 vacancy and partner George Russell, who still has another year left on his contract. Although Mercedes is once again shining and moving into the fight for next year’s championship, team boss Wolff is not letting this change his mind about who will replace Hamilton.
“It doesn’t affect our thinking,” Wolff told several media outlets. “I always say we need a fast car. “And when we have a fast car, you put one driver in and it becomes interesting for many other drivers. “We need to stay calm and carry on with the season, keep focusing on the car, then see if the options are still the same. “But this doesn’t change things the other way around.”
Mercedes data ‘makes sense’ It’s been an incredible recovery for the Brackley-based side, who appear to have finally solved their problems. For the first time since the current regulations were introduced in 2022, Mercedes has made sense of the data generated in the simulator and wind tunnel through the direction of technical director James Allison.
As a result, the W15 finally equaled Russell and Hamilton, making both drivers more comfortable on the track. “There was a moment when James led, the data suddenly made sense and the gap narrowed,” Wolff added. “We work on how to balance the cars and how to put them in better positions. “That’s the most important thing. It’s not the mirrors or the front wings, but the balance we achieve.”
