Tyson Fury reveals decisive strategy to beat Oleksandr Usyk in rematch
Tyson Fury will need to utilize his entire arsenal of skills if he hopes to overcome Oleksandr Usyk in their highly anticipated rematch on December 21. This bout comes after the Ukrainian star defeated Fury in May, becoming the first undisputed heavyweight champion of the four-belt era.
In their first encounter, Usyk started strong but was outboxed by a confident Fury during the middle rounds. However, Usyk, nicknamed “The Cat,” made a remarkable comeback in the latter half, securing the eighth round and nearly stopping Fury in the ninth, ultimately winning a hard-fought split decision.
Before the fight, many in the boxing community doubted Usyk’s ability to handle Fury, citing the former cruiserweight champion’s smaller size. Despite Fury’s significant advantages in weight, height, and reach, he couldn’t capitalize on them.
Otto Wallin, a former opponent of Fury, believes the Brit must leverage his size difference more effectively in the rematch. Wallin, in an interview with talkSPORT.com, emphasized the importance of Fury using his physical attributes to keep Usyk at bay.
“It’s a tough challenge,” Wallin noted. “Fury is a big guy, so he has to keep Usyk off him and outbox him. He needs to use his long reach to his advantage, and when Usyk gets close, tie him up and lean on him.”
Wallin, who gave Fury unexpected trouble in their 2019 bout, opened a severe cut above Fury’s eye, forcing the Gypsy King to dig deep for a points victory. Wallin’s performance showed that Fury could be vulnerable, especially against a determined opponent like Usyk.
Wallin himself has faced ups and downs since fighting Fury, including a notable loss to Anthony Joshua. He is set to return to the ring on July 26 against Nigerian puncher Onoriode Ehwarieme in Atlantic City.
As Fury prepares for his rematch with Usyk, he must heed Wallin’s advice and make the most of his size and reach to reclaim his heavyweight throne.
