Ralf Schumacher, former F1 driver and younger brother of seven-time F1 champion Michael, has revealed on Instagram that he is dating a man. Schumacher shared on Instagram a photo of him and his partner, hand in hand, watching the sunset. The caption read: “The most beautiful thing in life is when you have the right partner by your side, someone you can share everything with.”
Schumacher was the first F1 driver to confirm he was in a same-sex relationship, which helped him receive significant support from friends, family and even within F1. Over the years, the sport has promoted greater inclusivity and diversity for the LGBTQIA+ community.
Close friend and actress Carmen Geiss commented that the former Toyota driver’s post was liberating. She said she discussed the possibility of going public with him before his Instagram post. “It was a brave decision that he thought long and hard about, and is now implementing it with pride and confidence,” Geiss commented.
“His coming out is not only a personal victory, but also a sign that he can finally live and love his true self without fear or shame.”
Schumacher’s son, David, was also quick to comment and praise his father’s decision. “I’m so happy that you finally found someone who makes you feel truly comfortable and safe,” the ADAC GT Masters racer commented. “Whether man or woman, I support you 100% and wish you all the best. Congratulations.” Ralf Schumacher was active in F1 from 1997 to 2007. He won six grand prix and currently works as an F1 analyst for German television.
