Although Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez has been so far dismissive of a fight with Terence Crawford, it doesn’t mean he hasn’t considered a plan of action for the match-up.
Crawford surprised fans and analysts when, after his statement Errol Spence Jr victory to become undisputed at 147, said he wanted to move up three divisions to 168 to fight Canelo for his four world titles.
The Mexican hasn’t entertained the callout much, claiming he would get no credit for beating the smaller man and saying the fight wasn’t in his immediate plans.
Still, he has been open that money is a driving factor in his decision-making and won’t rule the ‘Bud’ bout out entirely. With that in mind, he was asked by FightHype back in 2022 if it would be a tough fight to train for.
“I think Crawford [would be tough to prepare for] because he goes southpaw and orthodox. I think he’s a very difficult fighter.”
Canelo then revealed the two keys to victory – patience and body shots.
“Just be patient. Prepare myself like always and be patient, work the body [but] I think being patient is the key. Everybody looks for the head, and it’s very difficult to his that kind of fighter in the head.”
Crawford returns to the ring on August 3, a debut at super-welterweight against WBA Champion Israil Madrimov that will show fans whether or not he can handle more weight jumps.
Canelo is set for a September fight and the opponent list has reportedly been whittled down to two, namely Edgar Berlanga or Chris Eubank Jr.
