🚩 FIA DECLARES WAR: Illegal Mini DRS Blown Away in Shocking Rule Shift for China

The FIA has introduced a significant rule change ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix, targeting the controversial use of what some have dubbed “mini DRS” systems in Formula 1 rear wings. This move comes after the governing body tightened its testing protocols for rear wing deflection, prompted by concerns raised during the Australian Grand Prix earlier this season. The decision appears to validate Red Bull Racing’s earlier assertions about their rivals’ tactics, shedding light on their optimism about closing the performance gap to McLaren. With upcoming races in China and Japan poised to challenge teams like McLaren, the big question now is whether this regulatory shift will disrupt the current pecking order or if McLaren’s MCL39 will continue to reign supreme as the grid’s most dominant car.

The issue of rear wing flexibility has been a hot topic in F1 for some time, with teams constantly pushing the boundaries of the regulations to gain aerodynamic advantages. In Australia, the FIA observed behavior in certain rear wing designs that raised red flags, particularly around how some teams appeared to exploit flexing to mimic the drag-reducing effects of the Drag Reduction System (DRS) outside of its designated zones. While DRS is a legal, controlled mechanism to boost overtaking, any unauthorized manipulation of aerodynamics—often referred to as “mini DRS”—is strictly prohibited. The FIA’s dissatisfaction with what they saw Down Under led to a swift response: stricter deflection tests to ensure compliance and close this loophole.

Red Bull, who had voiced concerns about their competitors’ rear wing designs, now seem vindicated by the FIA’s crackdown. The team has struggled to match McLaren’s pace throughout much of the 2025 season, with the MCL39 establishing itself as a formidable force on the grid. Red Bull’s engineers had hinted that some rivals were gaining an unfair edge through clever aerodynamic tricks, and the FIA’s findings in Australia appear to align with their suspicions. This rule change could level the playing field, offering Red Bull a chance to claw back ground in their pursuit of McLaren. The team’s optimism, once seen as mere bravado, now carries weight as they prepare for the next phase of the championship.

The timing of this regulation tweak is particularly intriguing. The Chinese Grand Prix, followed closely by the Japanese Grand Prix, features circuits that may not play to McLaren’s strengths. Tracks like Shanghai International Circuit and Suzuka are known for their demanding layouts, with long straights and high-speed corners that test aerodynamic efficiency and car balance. If McLaren’s performance dips even slightly due to these conditions—or the loss of any prior rear wing advantage—teams like Red Bull could capitalize. The tightened rules might limit McLaren’s ability to maximize their car’s potential, potentially exposing vulnerabilities that have been masked by their dominance so far this season.

However, it’s far from certain that this change will upend the pecking order. The MCL39 has proven to be a well-rounded machine, excelling across a variety of circuits and conditions. McLaren’s engineering team has consistently delivered upgrades that keep them ahead, and their drivers—Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri—have shown the skill to extract every ounce of performance from the car. Even with stricter rear wing tests, McLaren could adapt quickly, relying on their overall package to maintain their edge. The question remains: will this rule change be a mere speed bump for the Woking-based outfit, or a genuine turning point for their rivals?

For Red Bull and other chasing teams, the FIA’s intervention offers a glimmer of hope in an otherwise McLaren-dominated season. The strengthened deflection tests could force adjustments across the grid, potentially narrowing the gap at the front. Fans and pundits alike are eager to see if Red Bull’s confidence translates into tangible gains in China, or if McLaren’s supremacy will withstand this latest challenge. As the F1 circus heads to Asia, the impact of this rule change looms large—promising either a shake-up in the order or a reaffirmation of the MCL39’s status as the car to beat. With the championship battle heating up, every twist in the regulations could prove decisive in the fight for glory.
