🛑 FIA ANNOUNCE Lewis Hamilton Penalty verdict after Australian Grand Prix incident

The 2025 Formula 1 season kicked off with a dramatic Australian Grand Prix, marked by unpredictable wet weather that turned the race into a chaotic spectacle. The FIA’s recent announcement regarding Lewis Hamilton’s penalty verdict has added another layer of intrigue to an already eventful weekend at Albert Park. After an investigation into an incident involving the seven-time world champion during the race, the governing body has made a decision that has left fans and analysts buzzing.

The season opener was a test of skill and adaptability for drivers, as the rain-soaked track challenged both rookies and veterans alike. Several notable names, including Isack Hadjar, Jack Doohan, Carlos Sainz, Fernando Alonso, Gabriel Bortoleto, and Liam Lawson, saw their races end prematurely due to crashes. McLaren also faced difficulties as the conditions worsened late in the race. Oscar Piastri, who at one point dropped out of the top 10, managed to claw his way back to a respectable P9 finish. Meanwhile, his teammate Lando Norris seized the opportunity, navigating the chaos to reclaim the lead and secure a triumphant victory at the Australian GP.

For Lewis Hamilton, however, his debut race with Ferrari was far less triumphant. The rain arrived at an inopportune moment, catching the British driver off guard and causing him to slip down the order alongside his teammate Charles Leclerc. By the end of the race, Hamilton found himself battling at the lower end of the top 10. A late overtake by Piastri on the outside at Turn 9 pushed him to P10, a result that, while underwhelming for a driver of his caliber, could have been far worse given the circumstances.

The FIA’s attention turned to Hamilton after an incident early in the race triggered an investigation. Following a safety car deployment on the opening lap, stewards noted that Hamilton had failed to maintain the mandatory 10-car-length gap behind the safety car—a rule designed to ensure safety during neutralised conditions. He wasn’t alone in this misstep; Fernando Alonso, Yuki Tsunoda, and Liam Lawson were also flagged for the same violation. The scrutiny raised the possibility of penalties that could have further impacted their race outcomes, adding tension to an already unpredictable day.

After a thorough review, the FIA ultimately decided against imposing penalties on Hamilton or the other drivers involved. An official statement from the stewards detailed their reasoning: “The stewards reviewed positioning/marshalling system data, video, and in-car video evidence. Although the gap to the previous car exceeded the 10 car lengths prescribed in the regulations, the Stewards considered the weather conditions and also that the correct gap was restored well prior to the restart, as mitigating circumstances in this case. Hence no penalty is applied.” The decision highlighted the challenging wet conditions as a key factor, acknowledging that the drivers corrected their positions in time for the race to resume safely.

For Hamilton, escaping a penalty was a small silver lining in an otherwise difficult debut with Ferrari. The Australian Grand Prix exposed the vulnerabilities of even the most experienced drivers under such treacherous conditions, and his P10 finish reflected a race of survival rather than dominance. Meanwhile, Norris’s victory underscored McLaren’s ability to capitalize on the chaos, setting an early tone for the season.

The FIA’s lenient ruling has sparked discussions about consistency in officiating, especially in a race where weather played such a pivotal role. For Hamilton, Alonso, Tsunoda, and Lawson, the decision offers a reprieve, allowing them to move forward without the burden of additional sanctions. As the 2025 season unfolds, this incident serves as a reminder of the fine line drivers must walk in Formula 1—where split-second decisions, unpredictable elements, and the ever-watchful eyes of the stewards can shape the narrative of a race. With Hamilton now donning Ferrari red, fans will be eager to see how he rebounds from this rocky start in the races to come.
