Margo Hayes: Breaking Barriers in Climbing
Margo Hayes, born in 1996, has etched her name in the annals of climbing history. She is not just a climber; she is a force of nature, a pioneer, a trailblazer who has redefined what is possible in the world of rock climbing. More than just her accomplishments, it is her unwavering spirit, her dedication to pushing boundaries, and her commitment to fostering inclusivity that make Margo Hayes a true icon.

Margo Hayes made history in 2017 when she became the first female climber to conquer El Capitan without a harness. At just 20 years old, she left viewers “on the edge of their seats” when she completed the ascent at a record height of 3,000 feet. This incredible feat solidified her place as one of the greatest climbers of our time and opened the door for more women to push the limits in the sport.

Margo’s journey began in Boulder, Colorado, a city synonymous with climbing. Exposed to the sport early in her life, she quickly developed a passion for the vertical world. Her parents, both climbers, fostered her love for the sport, introducing her to the intricacies of technique, strategy, and the sheer joy of ascending rock faces.

Growing up in Boulder also gave Margo access to some of the best training grounds in the world. She honed her skills in the Rocky Mountains, constantly challenging herself on different routes and pushing her limits. By the age of 11, she was already competing in youth climbing competitions, where she quickly established herself as a top contender.Margo’s talent was evident from a young age. She began competing at 11, quickly rising through the ranks and becoming a dominant force in the youth competition scene. At 14, she made history by becoming the youngest female to climb a 5.14d route, a feat that established her as a rising star in the climbing community.

As she transitioned into professional climbing, Margo’s ascent continued. She quickly made a name for herself in the world of sport climbing, dominating competitions and breaking records. In 2016, she became the first woman to climb a 5.15a route, solidifying her place as one of the best climbers in the world.

Margo’s achievements are not limited to just competitions. She has also pushed the boundaries of what is possible in outdoor climbing. In 2017, she became the first woman to complete “La Rambla,” a notoriously difficult 5.15a route in Spain. And of course, her most iconic achievement to date, the free solo ascent of El Capitan, cemented her status as a trailblazer in the climbing world.

Her accomplishments have not gone unnoticed, with many of the top climbers in the world praising her talent and determination. Adam Ondra, one of the world’s best climbers, has said of Margo, “She is just crushing everything she touches.” And her mentor and fellow climber, Chris Sharma, has described her as “an incredible athlete and an amazing human being.”

One of the most significant impacts of Margo’s achievements is the representation she brings to the sport. As the first woman to complete certain routes and break records, she is inspiring a new generation of female climbers. Her presence in the climbing world is essential in encouraging more women to take up the sport and push themselves to reach new heights.

Margo isn’t just breaking barriers for women; she is also dedicated to fostering inclusivity in the climbing community. In a sport that has traditionally been dominated by men, she is actively working towards creating equal opportunities for all. She has spoken out about the importance of diversity and inclusivity in climbing and has used her platform to promote these values.

Margo’s efforts have extended beyond just words; she has also partnered with organizations such as ClimbAID to help bring climbing to underprivileged communities around the world. By using her influence for good, she is making the sport more accessible and welcoming to everyone, regardless of their background.

Margo Hayes has undoubtedly already made a significant impact on the world of climbing, but her journey is far from over. With her unwavering determination and passion for the sport, there’s no telling what she will accomplish next. She continues to push herself and inspire others, and her dedication to inclusivity and representation is paving the way for a more diverse and inclusive future in climbing.

Margo has her sights set on even bigger challenges, both on and off the rock. She has expressed interest in tackling multi-pitch climbs and exploring different styles of climbing, showing that she is not afraid to step out of her comfort zone. And with her drive and talent, there’s no doubt she will continue to break barriers and achieve new heights in the coming years.
