Carlos Sainz shocks F1 world with reaction as Red Bull rejects Perez replacement candidate

Carlos Sainz has opened up about his rejection by Red Bull for the 2025 season, revealing that he sees it as a blessing rather than a setback. The Ferrari driver, who found himself out of contract earlier this year after Ferrari signed Lewis Hamilton, was one of the most sought-after drivers in the market. However, despite his interest in joining the Austrian team, Red Bull ultimately chose to extend Sergio Perez’s contract ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix.

Appearing on the Beyond the Grid podcast ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Sainz discussed the reasons behind Red Bull’s decision and his feelings toward it.

“Red Bull had me available for six months, and they didn’t pick me, and I think it’s because I simply don’t fit into the type of driver they need right now in Red Bull, and I’m completely fine with that. If anything, they’re making me a favour,” Sainz explained.

He further emphasized that missing out on Red Bull was not a lost opportunity: “I don’t see myself as a lost opportunity to not wait until December. That’s not how the Formula 1 market works. If I would have done that, I might have even been without a Formula 1 contract for 2025 if I kept Alpine, Williams, or Audi waiting this late.”

In contrast, Sainz expressed gratitude for Williams F1’s efforts to secure his signature for the 2025 season. He praised team principal James Vowles, highlighting how much he felt wanted by the British team. “I have obviously an ego, and I’m going to go with the people that really want me. James [Vowles] did an incredible job convincing me to join them. It’s a project I’m excited about,” Sainz said.

Williams F1 confirmed that Sainz will take part in the Abu Dhabi post-season test, marking the first steps in his preparations for the 2025 season. The 30-year-old will join the team on a multi-year deal, partnering with Alex Albon as they aim to make strides under the new engine regulations in 2026 and beyond.

With this new chapter, Sainz is eager to contribute to Williams’ growth and advancement in Formula 1.
