In a candid interview with ESPN, Mike Tyson unveiled secrets that led the audience through a rollercoaster of emotions, from shock to horror. Throughout his tumultuous life, the “Iron Mike” has been imprisoned 38 times for various offenses, ranging from petty crimes like theft, traffic accidents, and public disorder, to serious felonies such as assault and rape.
Tyson’s childhood was marked by witnessing domestic violence and an unusual mother who likely shaped his future persona. As a child, the future boxing champion often saw his mother scald her boyfriends and ex-lovers with boiling water, laundry water, and hot coffee. Among Tyson’s numerous incarcerations, his longest stint was three years for the 1992 rape conviction of Desiree Washington, Miss Black Rhode Island (a beauty contest in Indianapolis, Indiana). Tyson still denies the charge: “There are many reasons I should have gone to jail, and I deserved it for those actions. But I did not rape Desiree Washington. I never did that, and I will never admit to something I didn’t do,” Tyson insisted.
Tyson has yet to apologize to Evander Holyfield, who defeated him in 1996. In their rematch on June 28, 1997, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Holyfield knocked Tyson down twice. Frustrated, Tyson infamously bit off part of Holyfield’s ear and was subsequently disqualified.
One of the most shocking revelations from Tyson’s past involves impregnating a female prison guard during his incarceration. The child was never born, and Tyson lost contact with the woman upon his release.
Despite his notoriety, Tyson cherishes certain moments as beautiful memories or lessons that helped him resist life’s temptations. As a youth, he and his friends stole from a wealthy family in Brooklyn but were caught by the homeowner. Rather than punish or call the police, the homeowner advised Tyson to pursue boxing—a suggestion that led him to become a legendary fighter.
During his prison time, Tyson was honored with visits from famous friends, including actress Florence Henderson. Tyson claimed to be close friends with the late U.S. President John F. Kennedy Jr. He admitted to advising Kennedy against using small-engine planes, advice that went unheeded. Tragically, Kennedy died in a plane crash in 1999.
Mike Tyson’s life story is a blend of chaos, crime, and redemption, making him one of the most intriguing figures in the world of sports. His journey from a troubled childhood to a world-renowned boxing champion remains a testament to his complex and resilient character.
