Former Heavyweight Champion Advises Deontay Wilder To “Get Back On The Horse” And Face His Next Opponent.

Deontay Wilder is contemplating retirement after experiencing two recent losses in the heavyweight division. Earlier this year, he faced Joseph Parker and appeared unusually hesitant, resulting in a shutout points victory for Parker. Wilder’s subsequent fight against Zhilei Zhang saw him knocked out in the fifth round, further cementing his thoughts about retirement, as he had previously stated that a defeat might lead him to hang up his gloves.

Former heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs, speaking to FightHype, advised Wilder, who hails from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to consider fighting at a lower level to regain his confidence and potentially end his career on his terms. Briggs suggested Wilder should train well and engage in fights at a less competitive level, possibly in his hometown, where he could gather local support and rebuild his confidence. Briggs referenced other boxing legends like Joe Louis who also managed their careers in a similar manner. He encouraged Wilder to take his time and return to the sport if and when he feels ready, emphasizing the importance of ending his career as he sees fit.
