FRANK WARREN COLUMN: Daniel Dubois beat Anthony Joshua last weekend with Dynamite’s promoter never doubting his heavyweight champion
A star was born last Saturday in the middle of Wembley Stadium.
A young man who has come through adversity, who has battled back after taking criticism from people who should know better. Daniel Dubois went out into the middle of the national stadium and put in the performance I always knew he was capable of.
A lot has been made about Anthony Joshua in the build-up and afterwards. I understand that. ‘AJ’ has been a big name for so long and a lot of people in the stadium were there for him.
But I said before the fight that they would walk out cheering for Daniel and they did just that.
Now let’s give the fighter his credit as he solidified his position as a bona-fide world heavyweight champion.
There has been more talk this week about national anthems and who sponsored the show than the performance of my man.
A lot of rubbish has been said quite frankly. But forget about all that nonsense. It’s typical Britain.
Let’s celebrate the fight instead of pulling it apart. I’m shocked about some of the things that have been said but people are entitled to their opinion.
The fact of the matter is there wasn’t a person who was inside that stadium who wasn’t entertained.
What’s next for Daniel now? We’ve had a couple of brief chats but now he’s going on holiday. When he comes back we will talk and we will make some decisions.
Not only did Daniel show what he can do with his attack, he showed he has a good chin too. I simply cannot see the second fight being any different.
Daniel showed how good he is last weekend but this is just the start for him. He’s 27. He’s got the world at his feet.
It will get bigger and better from here with so many top fights out there for him. But it was a proud moment to see someone we backed so heavily come out on top after he was written off.
We never lost faith in him. Last weekend showed why.
